A Vorici calculator is a tool that estimates the probability of rolling a specific combination of socket colors on a piece of gear, and how many Chromatic Orbs (or crafting attempts) you should expect to spend to get there. The name comes from Vorici, the master crafter whose bench recipes exiles have historically used to influence socket colors — but the underlying math applies whether you’re spamming orbs manually or using a bench recipe.

Instead of trial and error, the calculator takes the item’s displayed attribute requirements and turns them into a real probability, so you can decide whether a socket re-color is worth attempting at all.

How it works

Every socket on an item independently rolls a color, and the odds of each color aren’t 33/33/33. They lean toward whichever attribute the item demands most. A Strength-heavy body armor, for example, will produce red sockets far more often than blue ones, even though blue is technically still possible.

  • Strength pulls sockets toward Red.
  • Dexterity pulls sockets toward Green.
  • Intelligence pulls sockets toward Blue.

An item with no attribute requirement at all (some jewelry, some unique bases) rolls all three colors with roughly equal weight. The bigger the gap between an item’s requirements, the more lopsided the odds become, which is exactly why a plain “1 in 3” guess is usually wrong.

The formula

Note: Grinding Gear Games has never published the exact internal algorithm. The model below is the widely used community approximation that this calculator — and most Vorici-style tools — are built on. Treat results as a close estimate for budgeting, not a guaranteed exact percentage.

For an item with Strength requirement S, Dexterity requirement D, and Intelligence requirement I, the per-socket chance of each color is:

Once you have a per-socket probability for each color, the chance of hitting an exact combination across all sockets on the item follows the multinomial distribution — the same math used for “what are the odds of exactly 2 heads in 5 coin flips,” just with three outcomes instead of two.

Worked examples

Example 1: A pure Strength chest piece requiring 155 Str, 0 Dex, 0 Int, with 4 sockets, targeting 3 Red / 1 Blue. Red weight is high (≈98%), Blue weight is tiny (≈0.6%), so this combination is very expensive — often better solved with a bench recipe that guarantees the off-color rather than pure Chromatic spam.

Example 2: A hybrid Str/Dex glove requiring 70 Str and 70 Dex, 2 sockets, targeting 1 Red / 1 Green. Because the two attributes are close, this is a relatively cheap and common outcome — you’d expect it within a handful of orbs.

Example 3: A no-requirement accessory or a Str/Dex/Int hybrid unique, 3 sockets, targeting 1 of each color. With near-equal weights, this is close to the “textbook” equal-odds multinomial case, and usually cheap to hit.
